Motorhomes and caravans serve different households

Caravans have greater exposure to younger families, mortgage costs and the price of a suitable tow vehicle. Motorhomes have greater exposure to retirement wealth, housing equity and couple-based touring.

Private motorhome additions remain below caravans in the displayed period when rental vehicles are separated. The caravan decline is therefore not evidence that private buyers simply switched to motorhomes. Chinese manufacturing is also understated where products are designed or completed in Australia after overseas structural production.

Motorhome and caravan additions
Motorhome and caravan additionsPrivate motorhome additions are separated from rental activity so household demand is not inflated by fleet replacement.

The publication establishes definitions and a baseline. Recurring releases can then track additions monthly, transfers quarterly, inventory monthly or quarterly, and rental cycles half-yearly.

The critical discipline is to keep registrations, completed transfers, listings and physical stock separate.

Evidence note: Every update should publish its observation date, definition, denominator and any revision to earlier data.
